Why I founded Break Through The Boardroom

I founded Break Through The Boardroom in 2025 because too many great schools are being held back by something that should never be a problem in the first place.

Most headteachers receive little to no training in how to work effectively with their boards. Most governors, in turn, receive minimal meaningful support once appointed. That gap creates friction that burns out great people and holds back school improvement.

My background

I'm an EMCC accredited coach and trained facilitator, with 25 years' experience across the education sector.

I began my career in educational publishing, and then as a primary school teacher in East London, where I later became a SAPERE Philosophy for Children (P4C) facilitator and consultant - developing the questioning and dialogue skills that now sit at the heart of my coaching work.

For the past decade, I have supported, coached and mentored leaders across the public and private sectors to create the conditions where people slow down, ask better questions, and think more clearly together.

In my spare time, I am a serving Chair of an NGA Award Winning board, and trustee of the National Association of Small Schools, and bring an understanding of small school leadership directly into my coaching work.

My approach

I believe that making your boardroom work for you has very little to do with finding the perfect mix of governors, and everything to do with how you as a headteacher show up in the room. That is a simple skill - rarely taught - but easily learned.

Everything I do focuses on that crucial space between you and your board. Fix that, and so much else begins to fall into place.
