Too many head-governor partnerships have become exercises in box-ticking and data presentation. We're drowning in accountability measures while the real purpose of governance - driving school improvement - gets lost in the paperwork.

The strongest governance partnerships I've seen don't just share data - they share purpose. They're not obsessing with dividing operational from strategic work. Instead, they're laser-focused on how their partnership drives real improvement for children.


But right now? Many of these relationships are running on empty. Governors volunteer because they want to make a difference, not to become compliance monitors. Heads need strategic partners, not just policy approvers. Yet we keep spinning our wheels in the same rut of reports and reviews.
